Capital of a sparsely populated province far from the rich farmlands and industrial centers, the city is remarkably cosmopolitan and dotted with monuments attesting its place in Iranian history. For centuries the region was an important junction on the caravan routes between Iran and India.
Kerman has suffered repeated invasions and destruction –the last at the hands of the founder of the Qajar Dynasty during his attempt to overthrow the Zand prince. Capturing the city he treated the inhabitants with barbaric cruelty for their support of the prince.
